Hailing from Wigan, Tierney is into his tenth year as a Premier League referee, having first taken charge of a top flight match in August 2014.

The 42-year-old spent four years as a FIFA-listed official between 2018 and 2022, and has three Wembley finals on his CV - the Championship play-off final between Aston Villa and Derby County in 2019, the 2021 Carabao Cup final between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur and the 2021 Community Shield clash involving Leicester City and Manchester City.

Friday's game at the City Ground will be Tierney's third appointment involving Newcastle this term, with the first coming in their 4-0 win over Aston Villa at St. James' Park in October. His other visit to Tyneside was for the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Southampton, which Eddie Howe's side won 2-1.

Tierney oversaw four of United's matches last season, with all four coming at St. James' Park.
