The Wigan-born official had been on the National List of Referees since 2009, working his way through the divisions before his first top flight appointment in August 2014.
Five years later Tierney was promoted to the FIFA list of referees, allowing him to take charge of international games and fixtures in European competition, and oversaw the Championship play-off final between Villa and Derby County at Wembley later in 2019.
In 2021, he took charge of the Carabao Cup final between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, while the 41-year-old refereed four games involving United last term - the 2-2 draw with Southampton, the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea, the 1-0 win over Burnley and the 1-1 draw with Watford, all at St. James' Park.
