Young Magpies beaten by York in final pre-season friendly

Written by Luke Vinton

Newcastle United Under-23s ended their pre-season campaign with a 4-1 defeat against York City at Little Benton on Saturday afternoon.

Chris Hogg and Peter Ramage's side trailed 1-0 at half-time following a goal from a Trialist before Olly Dyson's header, two minutes after the restart, doubled the Minstermen's advantage.
United's Adam Wilson immediately halved the deficit with a close-range finish before City, managed by former Newcastle defender Steve Watson, extended their lead further through Rob Guilfoyle's brace.
York, who missed out on promotion to the National League last term, opened the scoring after a Trialist managed to weave past the United defence before firing a low strike past Dan Langley.
Elias Sørensen - a representative of Denmark at under-21 level - saw two efforts pushed away by York goalkeeper Ryan Whitley before the 20-year-old striker struck the underside of the crossbar.
After a number of changes from both sides, Dyson extended the visitors' lead after a teasing cross from the right wing found the substitute, who diverted the ball home.

Three minutes later, after Elliot Anderson's shot was spilled by Whitley, Wilson was on hand with a simple finish to reduce the disadvantage.
Guilfoyle restored York's two-goal lead as the forward's shot beat Langley and crossed the goal line before the teenager notched his second goal in the closing stages with a fierce strike from inside the penalty area.
The young Magpies face their Middlesbrough counterparts in their opening Premier League 2 fixture of the 2020/21 season on Friday, 11 September, with kick-off at 12pm (BST).
The division two clash will be played behind closed doors at United's Little Benton Academy due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Newcastle United Under-23s: Dan Langley, Ryan Barrett, Oisín McEntee, Ludwig Francillette, Oliver Walters (Lewis Cass 16), Jack Young, Niall Brookwell (Jack Young 63), Kyle Scott, Adam Wilson (Rosaire Longelo 63), Rosaire Longelo (Elliot Anderson 46), Elias Sørensen.
