International call-ups for Schär and Lewis

Newcastle United duo Fabian Schär and Jamal Lewis could face each other in the next fortnight after both were called up by their respective countries.

Schär will link up with Switzerland while Lewis has been named in the Northern Ireland squad – with the two nations set to face each other in a 2022 World Cup qualifier next week.

Centre back Schär could line up for his country in their friendly against Greece in Basel on Wednesday, 1st September, before a home qualifier against Italy on Sunday, 5th September, also at St. Jakob-Park.

Switzerland then travel to Belfast to play Lewis’ Northern Ireland at Windsor Park on Wednesday, 8th September, with both sides vying for Group C points. All three games kick off at 7:45pm BST.

Full back Lewis, meanwhile, is part of Ian Baraclough’s Northern Ireland squad for their three fixtures during the break from domestic club action, with a trip to Vilnius to face Lithuania in a qualifier up first on Thursday, 2nd September (7:45pm BST).

They then play Estonia in a friendly in Tallinn on Sunday, 5th September (5pm BST), before another qualifier against clubmate Schär’s Swiss side a week on Wednesday.

And young defender Oisin McEntee, who is currently part of United’s under-23 squad, could feature for his country as well, having been called up for the Republic of Ireland Under-21s for a European Under-21 Championship qualifying double-header.

McEntee’s side face Bosnia & Herzegovina in Zenica on Friday, 3rd September at 3:30pm BST, before travelling to Dudelange to play Luxembourg on Tuesday, 7th September (3pm BST).
