Loan watch: Elliot on target again

Written by Dan King

Elliot Anderson continues to impress during his loan spell with Bristol Rovers, with the teenager scoring again on Saturday to earn the Gas a vital point towards their promotion push.

Joey Barton's side were trailing at Prenton Park when, in the 63rd minute, Anderson's wonderful touch allowed him to not only control Luca Hoole's looping header but also wrong-foot his marker sufficiently for him to be able to drill home with his left foot from 12 yards.

It was his fourth goal in 16 appearances for Rovers, who are sixth in League Two, and Barton said: "I challenged him, saying he needs to add that little final bit, the goals, and he's come up with a really good goal. It was a superb first touch and he managed to find lots of space in the box.

"That was due to his really good balance and footballing ability. Then he's still got a lot to do, but finishes with his weaker foot - if he has one."

Mansfield Town are also challenging for promotion from the same division - they're currently fourth - and did their chances no harm with a 4-0 win at struggling Scunthorpe. Matty Longstaff played the whole game for the Stags.

And while Hartlepool's first season back in the Football League looks set to end with a midtable finish, they gained a good point with a 1-1 draw at leaders Forest Green, with Joe White coming on as a 69th-minute substitute.

In League One, Kell Watts played the full game for leaders Wigan Athletic as they beat Lincoln 3-1. He picked up a yellow card in what was his 31st appearance of the campaign in all competitions, but more importantly looks increasingly likely to collect a title-winners' medal before returning to Tyneside in the summer.

Jeff Hendrick missed Queens Park Rangers' 2-1 Championship defeat to Preston due to injury while Freddie Woodman was an unused substitute in Bournemouth's 0-0 draw with Sheffield United, but in the Scottish Championship, Oisín McEntee played 90 minutes as Morton won 1-0 at Raith.
