Loan Watch: Woodman set for Wembley final

Freddie Woodman’s Swansea City will face Brentford at Wembley in the Championship play-off final later this month.

The on-loan Newcastle United stopper was between the sticks for the second leg of the Swans’ semi-final against Barnsley, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Matt Grimes’s opener for the hosts was cancelled out when Cauley Woodrow beat Woodman, but after Steve Cooper’s side’s 1-0 first leg win at Oakwell last week, the Welsh outfit progressed on aggregate.

That means that the division’s golden glove winner Woodman - who kept 20 clean sheets in the league this term - will get the chance to play at Wembley for the first time as they bid to return to the Premier League.

Swansea will play the Bees on Saturday, 29th May, in what is likely to be Woodman’s 52nd and final outing of his season-long loan spell with the club.

Meanwhile, Lewis Cass is also likely to be in play-off action in the coming weeks, as his Hartlepool United side booked their place in the National League play-odds despite being beaten by champions Sutton United on Sunday.

Pools were beaten 3-0, with young defender Cass playing the first hour before being replaced, and will round off their league campaign against Weymouth next Saturday as they bid to make sure of their play-off spot.

In Spain, Florian Lejeune brought the curtain down on his loan spell with Alaves as they were beaten 1-0 by Sevilla in La Liga.

It was the Frenchman’s 34th league outing of the campaign, with his side having already secured safety before his 90-minute run-out on Sunday.

And Yoshinori Muto was an unused substitute for Eibar as they were beaten 1-0 at home to Barcelona - a result which confirmed their relegation from the Spanish top flight.

The Japanese forward made 26 appearances and netted one goal in La Liga during his loan spell this term, but was unable to help Eibar beat the drop.
