Eddie Howe's side return to competitive action this weekend when they face Erik ten Hag's side in a repeat of this season's Carabao Cup final, aiming for a third consecutive Premier League victory after 2-1 triumphs over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest respectively.

This will be the fourth time Attwell has officiated a fixture involving the Magpies this term, with the Nuneaton-born official overseeing Newcastle's 4-1 away win at Southampton in November, booking no United players that afternoon.

The 40-year-old whistler was also in charge of Newcastle's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg win against the Saints and booked a total of eight players that evening, including Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimarães and Allan Saint-Maximin whilst sending off Southampton defender Duje Ćaleta-Car.

Promoted to the Select Group of Referees in 2016, Attwell was also the man in the middle for Newcastle's 1-1 draw away at AFC Bournemouth in February, booking Sven Botman, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon on the South coast.
