The Magpies make the long trip to the South coast this weekend to face Roberto De Zerbi’s side as they aim to return to winning ways following narrow defeats against Manchester City and Liverpool.

The Nuneaton-born official, promoted to the Select Group of Referees in 2016, oversaw Newcastle’s 4-1 away win at Southampton last season, booking no United players during the Premier League clash.

The 40-year-old whistler also took charge of United’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg victory over the Saints, handing out eight yellow cards during the Magpies’ 1-0 win at St. Mary’s Stadium, including Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimarães and Allan Saint-Maximin whilst sending off Southampton defender Duje Ćaleta-Car.

Attwell was the man in the middle for Newcastle’s 1-1 draw away at AFC Bournemouth in February, booking Sven Botman, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon at the Vitality Stadium, as well as United’s 2-0 victory against Manchester United, brandishing no cards at St. James’ Park.

In the five games Attwell has officiated so far this term, the experienced referee has handed out a total of 14 yellow cards and two red cards, sending off Nottingham Forest’s Joe Worrall during last week's 3-2 defeat against Man United at Old Trafford.
