Team news: Pope starts in Austria, Botman on bench

Written by Tom Easterby

Nick Pope will make his Newcastle United debut in their second friendly of pre-season against 1860 Munich on Friday afternoon.

United face the German outfit at SaalfeldenArena Bürgerau in what is the first fixture of their training camp in Austria.

And head coach Eddie Howe has opted to hand a start to the summer signing from Burnley, with Pope having watched on from the sidelines during last weekend's 5-1 win over Gateshead.

The 30-year-old England stopper starts between the sticks for the Magpies against the 3. Liga outfit, with Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles, Dan Burn and Matt Targett forming a back four.

In midfield, Joe Willock will partner Jonjo Shelvey in the middle of the park, with Jacob Murphy and Allan Saint-Maximin on the left and right flanks respectively.

And in attack, Callum Wilson will lead the line with support from Elliot Anderson - fresh from a superb loan spell at Bristol Rovers last season - with the Scotland Under-21 international expected to slot into the number ten role.

The majority of the Newcastle squad that has travelled to Austria are expected to get minutes in Saalfelden, with Sven Botman also in line to make his first appearance for the club.

The Dutch centre half will start among the substitutes, with Bruno Guimarães, Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Joelinton also set to be involved at some stage as Howe's men ramp up their preparations for the new campaign.

Martin Dúbravka, Fabian Schär, Paul Dummett, Miguel Almirón, Ryan Fraser, Chris Wood and the Longstaff brothers - Sean and Matty - also start on the bench along with Jay Turner-Cooke, who impressed for United's second string last term.
