Thomson on target for Scottish youngsters

Written by Rory Mitchinson

Newcastle United’s Reagan Thomson scored his first goal for Scotland’s Under-17s in a friendly against Hungary on Friday.

16-year-old Thomson joined the Magpies’ Little Benton Academy on a scholarship from Queens Park last month, having already played a handful of times for his country at Under-17 level.

Zalán Kerezsi gave Hungary a first-half lead at the Pinatar Arena in Murcia – the same venue where United’s first team played during their mid-season training camps in 2017/18 and 2018/19 – only for Thomson to equalise with a fine strike just after the break, running onto a pass down the right flank before checking inside and curling the ball beyond ‘keeper Márk Pataki.

Thomson and Scotland Under-17s are back in action on Monday afternoon, taking on their counterparts from Sweden – again at the Pinatar Arena. Coached by former Celtic winger Brian McLaughlin, the game will be their last before their crunch triple-header against the Czech Republic, Republic of Ireland and Slovakia next month, where the young Scots will look to secure their place at this summer’s European Championships in Estonia.
