Newcastle United's final game of the 2023/24 season ended in an 8-0 defeat against the A-League All Stars at the Marvel Stadium on Friday.

Eddie Howe's side, consisting of numerous Academy products making their full senior debuts for the club, conceded three times in the first-half as Ben Old opened the scoring inside five minutes before strikes from Nicolas Milanovic and Adam Taggart extended the A-League All Stars' advantage further before the break.

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos' second-half brace and late efforts from Jake Hollman, Jordan Courtney-Perkins and Bozhidar Kraev rounded off a tough night in Melbourne, concluding United's post-season tour of Australia.

Howe assembled a youthful starting XI ahead of their friendly fixture at the Marvel Stadium, with Garang Kuol handed his first start for the club since arriving from A-League side Central Coast Mariners in January 2023.

Teenage trio Ben Parkinson, Ciaran Thompson and Dylan Charlton, all products of United's Academy, also made their full senior debuts while Travis Hernes, Jay Turner-Cooke and Amadou Diallo were awarded their first appearances for United at first-team level.

In the 5th minute, Newcastle fell behind through Old's strike. After Milanovic's teasing cross found Matthew Leckie inside the box, the Melbourne City forward was intercepted inside a crowded penalty area before the ball was only cleared into Old's path, who drove a low effort beyond Magpies goalkeepr Mark Gillespie.

Gillespie, the penalty shoot-out hero in Wednesday's win against Tottenham Hotspur, produced a smart stop to prevent Jay O'Shea from scoring, beating away the Dublin-born forward's effort from the edge of the box.

The United shot-stopper completed an impressive save minutes later, getting his fingertips onto Milanovic's shot which struck both posts before Thompson hooked the ball clear to safety.

In the 25th minute, Newcastle conceded for a second time through Milanovic as the Western Sydney Wanderers forward latched onto Ben Garrucio's cross before beating Gillespie to the ball before steering the ball home from close-range.

Taggart notched a third for the A-League All Stars in the 34th minute, collecting Angus Thurgate's pass before his curling effort from the edge of the box flew into the bottom left-hand corner.

In the 62nd minute, Stamatelopoulos netted a fourth goal for the A-League All Stars as the substitute latched onto the ball before bending a low effort from the edge of the box into the bottom right-hand corner.

Stamatelopoulos grabbed his second goal of the evening in the 75th minute after Nestory Irankunda darted towards goal before the winger's low cross was calmly tapped into the net by the striker from close-range at the back post.

In the 82nd minute, Hollman inflicted further misery on United after scoring the A-League All Stars' sixth goal of the night. As Irankunda's pass found Bozhidar Kraev, the Bulgarian substitute unselfishly teed up Hollman, who stroked the ball into an empty net.

With the full-time whistle approaching, Courtney-Perkins got his name off the scoresheet after the ball found its way to the back post from a corner before tucking the ball past substitute goalkeeper Aidan Harris.

Kraev rounded off the scoring in stoppage-time after racing onto Stamatelopoulos' pass before chipping the ball over Harris.
