Joelinton makes his first start of the season as Newcastle United take on Aston Villa at St. James' Park in the Premier League (kick-off 5.30pm BST).

The Brazilian made his return from injury as a second-half substitute at Coventry City on Monday night and comes in for Jacob Murphy in the only change to the starting XI.

Joelinton also wears the captain's armband. Speaking in UNITED, the club's official matchday programme, he said: "It's been really hard, not only this injury but the end of the season, and the other injuries that I had the last few seasons, so it's really annoying, but this is part of the job, part of football. It's part of life.

"I have setbacks but I always try to do the right thing and stay positive, and I have worked hard to be back and now just continue the work I've done and try to do everything I can to be available to be fit to help the team."

Regular skipper Dan Burn is on the bench, having also made his comeback at Coventry. Sven Botman and Malick Thiaw continue in central defence, with Lewis Miley and Lewis Hall the full backs in front of goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček.

Nico González and Joe Willock are alongside Joelinton in midfield with Harvey Barnes, Yoane Wissa and Matias Fernandez-Pardo in attack.

Barnes has been involved in ten goals - scoring six and assisting four - in 13 Premier League games against Aston Villa.

Murphy is named on a strong substitutes' bench which also features Burn, Fabian Schär, Aladji Bamba, William Osula, Sean Steur, Bazoumana Touré and Amar Dedić. Nick Pope is the back-up goalkeeper.
