Scott Bailey was left "disappointed" after Newcastle United Under-21s salvaged a 2-2 draw against Birmingham City in Friday's Premier League 2 clash.

After a goalless draw at the Knighthead Performance Centre, Charlie McArthur's header sent the young Magpies in front before Bria Bateman's strike and Aurelien Guernier's penalty turned the league clash in the Blues' favour.

The young Magpies, though, rescued a late point following Sean Neave's composed stoppage-time leveller, the teenage striker's third goal in his last four games at under-21 level, as the spoils were shared in the West Midlands.

"I think we're disappointed with a draw," Bailey told newcastleunited.com. "I felt during the game, we thought we should have won and we gave away two sloppy goals, one when there was a player off the pitch, and we created and played more football than them. so I think it's disappointing that we didn't get three points.

"When everything was fully right, we played really well and didn't show many signs of conceding but when we went down to ten men for 30 seconds and they scored, it was frustrating but I'm happy that we bounced back from 2-1 down.

"We should be happy to get a draw out of it after scoring in the 90th minute when losing but we also felt we should have won. I do think it's a good thing to want more as everyone in the dressing room wants to win."

United's second-string turn their attention to the Vertu Trophy when facing League One side Huddersfield Town in their opening Northern Group F clash at the Accu Stadium on Tuesday night (kick-off 7:45pm BST).

The Durham-born teenager is relishing the challenge of facing senior opposition and is aware of the test the Terriers will provide after knocking out Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in the Carabao Cup earlier this week.

"I'm really looking forward to it, especially the physical aspect," he added. "They're going to be a big, strong men's team and I enjoy those kind of games and want to be a part of it.

"There should be a good crowd there as they're a top League One side and everyone in that dressing room is going to be raring to go for it."
