The Italian came off against Barcelona in the Champions League in midweek, and Eddie Howe said in his pre-match media briefing that he would "make a decision closer to the game."

But Tonali is not in the squad to face Sunderland, with Nick Woltemade coming in to replace him as one of two changes from the Barça match. The other sees Sven Botman come in for Malick Thiaw, who drops to the bench.

The starting XI includes two boyhood Newcastle supporters in Dan Burn and Lewis Hall, with another two - Jacob Murphy and Sean Neave - among the substitutes.

Anthony Elanga keeps his place after scoring twice at Camp Nou in midweek while Kieran Trippier captains the Magpies in the first Tyne-Wear derby at St. James' Park in a decade.

Newcastle United: Aaron Ramsdale, Kieran Trippier (c), Lewis Hall, Sven Botman, Joelinton, Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, Anthony Elanga, Nick Woltemade, Dan Burn, Jacob Ramsey

Substitutes: Nick Pope, Yoane Wissa, Malick Thiaw, William Osula, Tino Livramento, Jacob Murphy, Joe Willock, Alex Murphy, Sean Neave
