Shania Hayles has been named Newcastle United Women's Sela Player of the Month for May.

The forward scored her second hat-trick of the season in the Magpies' only fixture in May, a 5-1 win against Blackburn Rovers.

That took Hayles' tally to 15 goals for the season in the Barclays Women's Championship, and she was delighted to end her first campaign with United on a high.

"It's always nice to get a bit of recognition, and to score a hat-trick in the game, it topped off a good season," she said. "To get Sela Player of the Month, I can't really ask for much more than that."

In scoring that treble against Blackburn, Hayles ticked off her personal goals target for the season, but she will not settle and is determined to tick off more targets in the new campaign.

"It has been a great season for me," she explained. "I set myself the target of 15 goals this season, so to hit that is nice, but for me it is about levelling up next season and getting the golden boot and promotion.

"There is always disappointment with not getting the golden boot, it was always going to be tough on the final day. Isobel Goodwin is one of my best friends, so I'm happy for her. Next season, it is definitely mine."

Reflecting on her first season with the Magpies, the forward was full of praise for the fans and spoke of the ambitions for next season.

"I can't really ask for anymore," she added. "I think everyone can tell I love the fans, I've always said that. Scoring in front of them, it doesn't get much better than that.

"It's been a good season. I think towards the end of it we have started to pick up how we want to play and do things. I'm excited to pick up where we left off next season and there is only one aim for us - the WSL."
