Leeds United were convincing winners as they climbed to third in the fledgling Premier League table and ended Matthias Jaissle's unbeaten start as the visitors' head coach.

He was not helped by the enforced early substitution of Nico González, while two of the hosts' goals took heavy deflections, but the German will know that his side fell well below the standards they'd set so far this term.

Bazoumana Touré's first goal for the club following his summer move from Hoffenheim was one positive, but those were otherwise in short supply on a disappointing night in West Yorkshire.

Matias Fernandez-Pardo made his first start for the Magpies and Yoane Wissa caused a nervous moment for James Trafford in the opening exchanges as he closed down the goalkeeper, who was relieved to see the ball break in his favour rather than that of the Newcastle number nine.

In the 11th minute, a fierce half-volley from Ethan Ampadu, the Leeds captain, hit his own man, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but Lukáš Horníček was called into action three minutes later, when James Justin headed across goal and Jayden Bogle improvised to shoot on the turn - only for the Magpies goalkeeper to dive low to his right to keep it out.

The visitors needed to make a change before the 20th minute when González, who took a blow to the face, was replaced by Sean Steur.

As Leeds continued to probe, Horníček pushed a long-range effort from Justin away then Nico Elvedi miscued when well placed in front of goal.

But if Newcastle were somewhat fortunate then, their luck was out just after the half-hour mark when Ao Tanaka's shot cannoned off both Steur and Lewis Miley before dropping into the net.

Then, within a flash, Calvert-Lewin headed home from Justin's right-wing cross after United carelessly conceded possession inside their own half.

Jaissle's suit jacket was off by now, with the head coach clearly up for the fight, but a tough task almost became virtually impossible when Gabriel Gudmundsson tested Horníček, who then blocked from Calvert-Lewin's follow-up to deny Leeds a third.

At the other end, Wissa had claims for a penalty as he appeared to be clipped by Elvedi in the area, but play continued and Harvey Barnes was denied by Trafford.

In first-half stoppage time, Calvert-Lewin scored his second as he jinked inside Sven Botman and slotted beyond Horníček, although there was another deflection at play - this time off Malick Thiaw.

At the beginning of the second period, Lewis Hall tried his luck but Trafford punched away the 22-year-old's shot.

Anton Stach stole the initiative in the 55th minute as United gave the ball away once more in a dangerous area, but the Germany international shot wide.

However shortly before the hour, and just after Jaissle made a triple substitution in an effort to change United's fortunes, Noah Okafor's strike found the net via the inside of a post as things went from bad to worse for the Magpies.

Barnes - who was clipped inside the box by Tarik Muharemović moments earlier - saw an attempt fielded by Trafford before, in the 89th minute, substitute Touré pulled one back to at least give the travelling supporters something to cheer.
