The newly-promoted hosts - with Sean Longstaff making his full debut against the team he left earlier in the summer - were resolute and organised, limiting Eddie Howe's men to few sights of goal at Elland Road.
The visitors did go close a couple of times through winger Jacob Murphy, who was restored to the starting line-up in Yorkshire, but couldn't find a way through and were unable to record a first win of the 2025/26 campaign.
In a first half of few chances, Tino Livramento was at the heart of most of the Magpies' forays forward. His driving run down the left and cutback for Osula caused Leeds problems just before the Danish forward fouled his man as he tried to meet Kieran Trippier's cross back into the box.
At the other end, Anton Stach saw a shot stopped by Fabian Schär on its way to Nick Pope's goal, with the German midfielder then trying his luck with a disguised free kick which failed to trouble the United custodian, who might have been expecting a cross.
Livramento was involved again in a half-chance for frontman Will Osula, whose effort on the turn hit Gabriel Gudmundsson before it could nestle in the bottom corner. Left back Gudmundsson then sent over a low centre towards Dan James at the far post, but the Welshman couldn't divert it home at full stretch.
Leeds' goalkeeper Lucas Perri made the first save of the contest, denying Murphy by palming his drive round the post, though the Brazilian stopper looked a little concerned moments later as Schär's deflected dink had him scrambling backwards before it landed on the roof of the net.
Lewis Miley was introduced at the break in place of Ramsey, who had been making his first start for the Magpies, but Daniel Farke's men still managed to play their way into some promising areas. One such move resulted in full back Jayden Bogle stepping inside and letting fly, but to no avail; his shot was far too high.
A left-footed drive from Murphy brought a smart stop from Perri soon after but with greater firepower sought, Howe sent on Harvey Barnes in place of Sven Botman with a quarter remaining. Another replacement, Lewis Hall, thumped over from around 20 yards out, but as the game wore on, United's threat waned. In the end it was Pope in the Magpies' goal who made the most important late contribution, saving with his feet from Dominic Calvert-Lewin to preserve Newcastle's point on a forgettable evening for both sides.
