Mason Miley reflected positively on his first start for our Under-21s following Friday's 1-1 draw against Sunderland in the Premier League 2.

Despite a positive first-half at the Academy of Light, Newcastle's youngsters fell behind in the second-half following Tom Lavery's close-range header but levelled in swift fashion courtesy of Anthony Munda's composed finish, ultimately sharing the spoils on Wearside.

Miley follows in the footsteps of older brothers, Lewis and Jamie, to represent his boyhood club at under-21 level and praised his side's character after falling behind against their local rivals.

"It's good to get a point," the Stanley-born youngster told newcastleunited.com. "We could have picked up three as we had quite a few chances in the first-half but we worked hard all game and deserved a point.

"We conceded first but we just had to regroup and stick together. It could've been easy for us to drop our heads and concede another but we managed to get back together and score a goal.

"It's a good platform for us to build on and try to attack our next game [against Wolverhampton Wanderers]."

After two substitute appearances in the Premier League International Cup against Dinamo Zagreb and Benfica respectively, Miley was only notified of his full Under-21s bow hours prior to what proved an assured display in the middle of the park.

Since signing a full-time scholarship with the Magpies' Academy last summer, the promising teenager has been pleased with his steady progression through the club's youth ranks in recent months.

Reflecting on his 82-minute outing, Miley added: "I only found out this morning. It would normally be the day before but the team changed so I was preparing on the bus.

"I thought I'd done well the other day [against Benfica in the Premier League International Cup]. It's always been coming and I just had to take my chance when I got it. I thought I attacked it well and put in a good performance.

"From the start of the season, I think I've progressed quite a lot from playing week-in, week-out for the Under-18s. I want to prove my quality with the chances I'm getting for the Under-21s.

"I want to keep pushing on after my first start and try to get more appearances for the Under-21s this season. It's a step up but I haven't had many games since coming back after Christmas. Getting these games under my belt is really good and, hopefully in the upcoming games, I can then last the full match."
