As he prepares his side for Monday night's trip to Coventry City (kick-off 8pm BST), Matthias Jaissle says he is delighted midfield 'warrior' Joelinton is nearing a return to action.

The Magpies return to action after the international break with a first top flight trip to the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The Sky Blues won their first Premier League game in the last round of fixtures, beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 away from home, while United beat Hull City 2-1 at St. James' Park.

Speaking to the media on Thursday afternoon, Jaissle revealed his Brazilian enforcer is making progress in his recovery from injury, though the news about goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen isn't quite as positive.

Here are some of the main talking points from his pre-match briefing:

On Joelinton's importance...

"He has qualities on the ball and out of possession. He is a leader - his body language shows that.

"We need warriors in the team. We are really happy to have him back training with us."

On Coventry City...

"Every team is capable to win against every opponent. Coventry have the quality.

"They won their last match, they have confidence after winning that game. They will have momentum.

"If we perform at our best, then it will be difficult to beat us. We want to make it as difficult for them as possible."

On injuries and players returning after the international break...

"They have returned. I have allowed some of them an extra day off. We will have a full group in tomorrow.

"We are hopeful there will be three or four back from the nine missing against Hull City.

"Ewen Jaouen will be out for two months with a hamstring injury.

"Joey is progressing well, he is doing better. We need to be smart in our load management."

On getting ready to return to action...

"I am happy we are back. The long break was a little bit unusual, but we are all happy football is back.

"We want to improve, we want to develop. From tomorrow onwards, we will have everyone back with us training and can align ahead of Monday."
