The story of Official Supporters Club, The Black Geordie Club, was recently celebrated at Soul Mama in Islington, where fans united with a Magpies Hall of Famer during Black History Month.
Founder Darryl McKay took the opportunity to look back on the group's origins, recalling how a chance meeting between students at university in London laid the groundwork for what has become a flourishing Official Supporters Club, hundreds of miles away from St. James’ Park.
"Over 20 years ago, while studying Sports Journalism, something special happened in my very first class. Out of 20 students, the four black students all said the same thing: we were Newcastle United supporters. That moment was the beginning of what would eventually become The Black Geordie Club”, said group founder Darryl McKay.
He continued: “We started by going to games together, watching Newcastle in pubs and bars, and simply enjoying being Black Geordies together. Then, through travelling to matches, meeting people and spotting familiar faces in the stands, the group began to grow organically.
Today, The Black Geordie Club boasts over 40 members, a growing online community and a history of hosting events - including watchalongs for recent Carabao Cup finals.
"What started in a university classroom has grown into a community built on football, friendship, identity, and a shared love for Newcastle United," McKay added.
To celebrate their story, Shola Ameobi spent the afternoon with members, sharing memories of his upbringing, playing career and current role as the club's Head of Corporate Affairs.
The former striker also turned the spotlight onto supporters themselves, listening to stories of how they discovered Newcastle United and what inspired them to follow the club.
“One of the most special things about Newcastle United is the club’s ability to bring people together, no matter where they are in the world”, commented Ameobi.
He added: “Listening to the experiences of fans here today was really powerful. What they've established in London is a brilliant example of the sense of community created by our supporter groups.
“The Black Geordie Club has built lasting friendships and created a place where people feel they belong. That's what Newcastle United is all about."
