Newcastle United Foundation’s top-flight Powerchair Football team are the first squad in more than a decade to proudly wear Newcastle United Football Club kit produced by official kit partner, adidas.

Newcastle United Foundation’s top-flight Powerchair Football team are the first squad in more than a decade to proudly wear Newcastle United Football Club kit produced by official kit partner, adidas. 

Players were issued with home shirts to represent the club and Foundation during the final game week of The Wheelchair Football Association National League Premiership, finishing the season third in the league after picking up three wins from their four matches across the weekend. 

The squad, made up of current England development players and ex-England internationals, train weekly with coaching staff from the official charity arm of the club as part of the Foundation’s free disability provision for children and adults across the North East. 

Teams from a range of education, sport and wellbeing programmes who play football in national leagues and at international tournaments with the Foundation are supplied with official kit, bringing together players of all ages and abilities united by the Magpies. 

Sam Smith, Newcastle United Foundation Powerchair Football team player and ex-England international, said: “It’s a very exciting opportunity to showcase the new adidas kit and the entire team are immensely proud to represent Newcastle United Foundation, Newcastle United and the wider community. 

“Being the first players to wear these black and white shirts gave us a huge boost of momentum for the final weekend of the season.  

“As a lifelong Newcastle United supporter, it’s a very special moment for me personally and for the rest of the team too.” 

The 2024/25 season adidas kit launched on Friday, 7th June, kicking off a highly anticipated multi-year partnership reuniting the Magpies with the sportswear brand. 

Ahead of the launch, Newcastle United announced it will donate £5 from every 2024/25 adidas home shirt that it sells by the end of August to Newcastle United Foundation – helping to provide more life-changing opportunities for children, young adults, families and older generations across the North East. 

Steve Beharall, Chief Executive of Newcastle United Foundation added: “We’re honoured to be able to showcase the new adidas kit and incredibly proud that our Powerchair Football team were able to finish the season in such strong style, achieving their highest league position in their history by finishing third in the WFA National League Premiership.   

“Our Powerchair team are an inspiring example of the Foundation’s free disability and wellbeing provision, made possible by vital funding and donations from our partners and supporters. 

“The money that is donated by buying your home shirt directly from the club will ensure that the Foundation can continue to provide free and inclusive opportunities for all to enjoy sport, socialising and play.” 

The WFA National League Premiership is the top level of the English Powerchair Football League pyramid with the 2023/24 season contested by 12 clubs playing all games at a central venue in Nottingham. 

Newcastle United Foundation Powerchair Football team earned promotion to the Premiership in the 2019/20 season after going undefeated in all competition. Last season, the six-player squad were runners-up in The FA Disability Cup hosted at St. George’s Park.
