The Toon teenagers fell behind inside the opening 60 seconds at the Magpies' Little Benton Academy following Israel Kelly's strike before Alfie Hutchison drew the hosts level in swift fashion.

Alfie Seldon, who netted nine league goals at U18 level last season, fired Newcastle ahead shortly after the half-hour mark before the 16-year-old winger, on target in last weekend's 3-1 comeback win against Derby County, extended United's lead two minutes after the restart.

Newcastle faced a nervy finale as Rocco Bardsley's penalty halved the deficit for the Potters but Chris Moore's side held firm to record back-to-back league wins, moving into top spot of the 15-team table.

There were full debuts at U18 level for Kyle Healy-Matthews and Kyran Thompson, who both arrived at the Magpies' youth set-up from West Ham United and Arsenal respectively this summer.

The young Magpies begin their U18 Premier League Cup campaign on Tuesday when facing an away clash against Fulham at Motspur Park (kick-off 12pm BST).
