The Magpies boss, whose side were beaten 2-1 by Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday, has opted to make two changes to his midfield, with Lewis Miley and Jacob Ramsey coming in for Sandro Tonali - who had been struggling with illness - and Joelinton.
Further forward, Jacob Murphy has also been handed a start in another alteration from the line-up that lost at the weekend, with Anthony Elanga joining Tonali and Joelinton among the substitutes for the game against the Portuguese giants.
Nick Pope is in goal, with Kieran Trippier, Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman and Dan Burn in front of him and Miley and Ramsey joining captain Bruno Guimarães in the engine room.
And Murphy and Gordon will look to provide support for in-form frontman Nick Woltemade, who starts in attack.
Fabian Schär, Harvey Barnes and Will Osula are on the bench along with Elanga, Tonali and Joelinton, with Joe Willock also named.
Young defenders Alex Murphy and goalkeepers Max Thompson and Aaron Ramsdale complete the list of substitutes available to Howe.
