Bianca Owens signs for Newcastle United Women

Written by Joseph Nelson

Newcastle United Women's newest recruit, Bianca Owens, is delighted to have signed for the club and can't wait to pull on the famous black and white stripes for the first time.

Owens, formerly of fellow FA Women's National League Division One North side Norton & Stockton Ancients Ladies, has been in prolific goalscoring form so far this term, netting eight goals.

She now links up with Newcastle number nine Katie Barker, who was the top scorer in the league last season, to form what promises to be a deadly strike force for Becky Langley's side.

"It's very exciting," the former Middlesbrough Women player told nufc.co.uk. "Everybody can see the direction the club wants to go in and I'm just happy to have the chance to be a part of it.

"The ambition is what drew me to the club. After chatting with staff and understanding the direction the club is heading, I knew I wanted to be here."

The striker is optimistic about Newcastle's league prospects this term, with the Lady Magpies narrowly missing out on promotion last season and currently sitting second in the table, one point behind leaders Durham Cestria.

She believes she can bring key assets to the table for Langley's side and help Newcastle push for the title.

"Promotion definitely is the target," she said. "It's a really tough league, but Newcastle have been consistently around the top of the table for two seasons now, and hopefully I can add to it.

"I hope I can bring something different. Ideally, I just want to compliment the other players and chip in with a few goals along the way."

With the Lady Magpies back in league action on Sunday, away to Stockport County Ladies, manager Langley expressed her pleasure in bringing Owens to the club ahead of the second part of the season.

"We are absolutely delighted to bring Bianca in,” she said. "She’s a prolific goalscorer and has such confidence in front of goal.

"Attackers need a certain level of arrogance. They try and sometimes it won't come off, but they have that ability to try it again. Bianca has that. I'm very excited for her to link up with Katie Barker."

Owens could make her Newcastle Women debut at Stockport this Sunday. Kick-off at Life Leisure Stockport Sports Village is at 2pm.

"The ambition is what drew me to the club. After chatting with staff and understanding the direction the club is heading, I knew I wanted to be here."
