Newcastle United defender Liam Gibson has joined Accrington Stanley on loan until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old – who helped the Magpies reach the last 16 in the Checkatrade Trophy this term – has linked up with fellow United loanee Dan Barlaser at the League One club, and will remain at the Wham Stadium for the remainder of the campaign.

Gibson has made 18 appearances for Ben Dawson’s under-23 side so far this season, having returned to action in the summer after being sidelined for over a year with illness.

The left back, who made his first team debut for Newcastle in a friendly win over Lillestrom in 2016, underwent four operations after being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.

The Stanley-born youngster, who has also spent time on loan at National League side Gateshead, could make his bow for John Coleman’s men when they host Bristol Rovers on Saturday.
