Eddie Howe has handed a start to teenage midfielder Elliot Anderson ahead of Newcastle United's Eusébio Cup clash against Benfica on Tuesday night (kick-off 8pm BST).

The 19-year-old, who joined the Magpies' Academy at the age of eight, has impressed on multiple occasions in pre-season and will begin in the middle of the park alongside fellow Geordie Sean Longstaff and Brazil international Bruno Guimarães.

Nick Pope starts in goal, after beginning on the bench against Mainz 05, in front of a four-man defence containing Kieran Trippier, captain Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman and Matt Targett.

Miguel Almirón, who has netted four goals during pre-season so far, and Allan Saint-Maximin, who was on target during two 11 v 11 training sessions against Burnley on Saturday, will occupy the respective flanks and aim to provide attacking support for sole striker Callum Wilson.

Howe has numerous attacking options to deploy from the bench, including Chris Wood, Joe Willock, Joelinton and Jonjo Shelvey.

Emil Krafth, who signed a new one-year contract extension on Monday, is likely to feature in Lisbon along with the likes of Karl Darlow, Fabian Schär, Dan Burn and Matt Ritchie, with Matty Longstaff, Jay Turner-Cooke and Matt Bondswell also named amongst the substitutes.
