This is my first time writing to you after being appointed vice-captain this season. It is truly an honour and a privilege. I’ve been here for a long time; I always try to wear the shirt with pride, give my best and to be the vice-captain for the club is a great honour for me. I’m very proud.

The role won’t change how I am in training or on the pitch. I always try to help the team in different ways. I’ve never worn the armband before but I always try to lead by example with the way I train, the way I work, and every time I step on the pitch I try to do my best to help the team. That’s one way to lead the team and I’ve always done that. Now with the armband I’ll keep doing the work I’ve always done.

There has been a lot of changes over the summer, with a new management team coming in and some new players. It’s up to the players that have been here for more time to help the new players to settle in quick, to make them feel happy, comfortable, to show the quality on the pitch. It’s our job to help them and make them feel at home.

It’s also been a good few weeks, with the new Head Coach. He’s a great guy as well. He is someone that wants to work hard and for us, it’s good to have him here, with a lot of energy. The way he plays suits us. We’re looking forward to achieving great things with him.

Before I finish, I’d like to talk about Kevin Keegan.

It was really sad when we heard the news that he passed away and as a squad, we wish his family all the best at such a difficult time. Kevin was a great player, a legend of the club and a great man. That was the most important thing, he was a great man that everyone loved. He will always be remembered and I know all the fans will give him great tributes this afternoon.

It’s going to be a big game this afternoon, there are a lot of things going on. It’s going to be a great atmosphere for sure. We have missed your noise, and it will give us the best chance to get three points and the win to take into an exciting season ahead.

Howay the Lads!

Today’s issue of UNITED is dedicated to Kevin Keegan, celebrating his incredible life and career.

Inside is over 30 pages of tributes to King Kev, looking back at his humble beginnings at Scunthorpe, to glory with Liverpool and the lasting legacy he leaves at Newcastle.

Those who knew him recall their memories of Kevin, while Culture Club looks at his impact away from the football pitch.

Elsewhere, there is an exclusive Lewis Miley interview, as the local lad reflects on his road to recovery from injury, and playing alongside brother Mason for the first team.

UNITED is on sale around St. James’ Park before kick-off, priced at £3.50.
