The German had seen his team come from behind to beat Valencia in the Spanish sun on Saturday, but they failed to shine in Edinburgh and goals from Thierno Barry, Iliman Ndiaye and Tyrique George gave the Toffees victory.

Harvey Barnes scored his second goal of the summer six minutes from time, but it was only a consolation for the supporters who made the trip to Scotland.

It was a bright enough start from United, wearing their new powder plum kits for the first time, with Yoane Wissa - looking to build on his two-goal show at Mestalla at the weekend - forcing a smart save from Mark Travers inside the opening couple of minutes.

Then Anthony Elanga stole the ball from Vitali Mykolenko and shot hard and low, but Travers pushed his effort around the post.

But Lukáš Horníček was called into action in the 14th minute to deny Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall then, in the 27th minute, Barry swept home after initially being halted by last-ditch Lewis Hall challenge.

Horníček showed strong hands again to keep out a stinging strike from Ndiaye, but moments later, Joelinton was adjudged to have fouled Dewsbury-Hall in the area and Ndiaye sent the Czech goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot.

Jaissle switched all ten outfield players at the break and within seconds, Murphy tested Travers.

Dewsbury-Hall saw a free kick tipped wide by Horníček before George scored a third for the blues.

Barnes pulled one back, converting from close range at the far post after Murphy delivered from the right, and that was at least some reward for an improved second half display.
