Women. Greenwood: 'Our fans gave me goosebumps'

One element of Newcastle United Women's Adobe Women's FA Cup tie at Manchester United Women on Sunday which stood out to both sets of players and staff was the noise that more than 1,000 Magpies fans made at Leigh Sports Village

Regardless of the result, and the 5-0 scoreline, the Geordies who made the trip were vocal throughout and roared Becky Langley's side on before, during and after the match.

Hannah Greenwood, who became a Newcastle player in the summer, says that the atmosphere the Magpies' supporters made is something she won't forget in a hurry.

"From the get-go when we walked out of the tunnel, the noise from our fans was incredible," she said. "Goosebumps up and down your arms and on the back of your neck. It was crazy.

"It was always going to be tough, and it was tough, but we knew we just had to stick together and give absolutely everything. That's what the team did."

Newcastle entered the match against the Women's Super League giants having never faced a top division team before, and Greenwood feels that Langley's team gave a good account of themselves in a difficult fixture.

"I mean, it's a compliment that they have put their starting XI out," she added. "In the tunnel, you are up alongside England players or whatever but you just kind of push that aside and see them as just another team.

"You have to do what you can do out there and back yourself. Back the team and just do all you can."

At the end of the match, Langley and her team went over to the Newcastle fans to applaud them for their backing.

That support is something Greenwood and the rest of the squad appreciate greatly, as the Magpies prepare to face Nottingham Forest Women at Kingston Park this Sunday (14:00 GMT kick-off).

"I can't express - Geordies are just mental," said Greenwood. "So good, so loud, even when we are down. They are still cheering and really carrying us."
