Tanya Oxtoby says the work done in pre-season has allowed Newcastle United Women to feel comfortable in three-game weeks as they get set for another away day at Durham in the Subway Players Cup on Sunday (kick-off 12pm GMT).

The Magpies came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Nottingham Forest last weekend, securing the point that has kept them top of the Barclays Women's Super League 2 table.

United boss Oxtoby emphasised that early-week sessions were about reflecting on Sunday's draw at the City Ground, and she knows her group of players will be ready to respond against their local rivals at Maiden Castle.

Here are some of the key points from the manager's pre-match interview:

On last weekend’s draw…

"It was a game of two halves, no doubt about that. I thought we needed to tweak a few things at half time, and the response from the entire group was exceptional.

"I think the stats don't lie - we should have won that game comfortably in the end.

"We dug ourselves a little hole, but we got ourselves out of it, and we showed a lot of courage and character to walk away with a point against a good side."

On how pre-season has prepared the team…

"All the prep we did in pre-season was to make sure we were ready. We have had a bit of a rough time in terms of the games, like two away games in a three-game week.

"I think we were prepped and ready for that, and from our perspective, we continue to grow, we continue to push and make sure that we execute for 90-plus minutes."

On having already beaten Durham in the league this term...

"I've said it before, the previous games are pretty irrelevant. I think we need to keep challenging ourselves, and we need to make sure that we keep moving in the right direction.

"Every game is going to be different, and we're playing on a grass surface this time, which will be very different to where we played them last time."

On Sunday's opponents…

"We know their threats, and we know what we need to be mindful of.

"For us, it's about winning the duels and being able to pick up first and second balls but controlling the game when we get the opportunity to do that.

"We have to set our standards nice and high, and make sure that with and without the ball we're executing, because that's really important."
