With Newcastle United Women's pre-season campaign set to get under way and the WSL2 fixture list about to be announced, Freya Gregory is itching to hit the ground running after ending last season in blistering form.

The Magpies winger and Scotland international was handed her first start for the Tartan Army over the summer in a brilliant draw away to the Netherlands in the Nations League.

She knows another strong season on Tyneside will see more opportunities like that come her way, and wants to carry on where she left off in 2024/25, with her last outing yielding three goal involvements.

"It feels like we've never been away, but it's great being back with all the girls," she said. "Training has been really good, although I think the sun being out has caught people off guard.

"Time flies when you're off in the summer, especially as I went straight away with Scotland, but it's a massive privilege every time I get called up.

"To get my first start was a great experience for me, and I want more of that, so I know I've got to add more on the pitch if I want to reach my potential. If I'm being honest, I wish I had a few more games at the end of the season to get me into a rhythm, but I'm so excited to hit the ground running again."

Following the restructuring of WSL2 this season, the top three teams could earn promotion to the Women's Super League, and Newcastle find out their fixture list for the 2025/26 campaign on Friday morning.

Gregory admits she will be looking out for a couple of fixtures in particular, but added: "With the ambition we've got, I think every game is going to be massive this season. We know there are no easy matches in this league.

"Of course, there are a few standout games I'll be looking for, including the derby, because as a player I'm someone who loves a derby game.

"Birmingham is also one that I love playing in and I'll certainly be looking out for."

The Lichfield-born winger has been joined by four new additions so far this summer, including two familiar faces in Jemma Purfield and Molly Pike, who Gregory spent time with at Southampton Women.

Gregory has enjoyed reuniting with her friends from the south coast and has been impressed by what they've already brought to the squad ahead of the new campaign.

"It's been nice having them both here, and it's always good having familiar faces around and friends I've built relationships with over the years," she said.

"Jem and I have been friends since we were at Leicester together, and I was just 18 when she was looking out for me and helping me out, so we've always had a nice relationship.

"Then with Molly, she'll probably tell you that I'm quite annoying most of the time, but we have a nice friendship together.

"They're both quality players, that goes without saying, and they're also really nice people who've added a good dynamic to the squad."
