After a tough end to the season for the Magpies, in which January signing Torpey's side fell short of a place in the top three, momentum is already building ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The energetic full-back has been taken in warmly since her move to Tyneside, with her versatility and honesty on the pitch winning over fans in black and white.

And Torpey - who has made six appearances for United so far - already has an eye on the future, both on and off the pitch.

"Coming in mid-season was a tough time for me to come in," said the Brisbane native.

"Yes, we did miss out on promotion, but it's just made me even more excited for next season. I have a lot of hope for the club, and I'm really excited for the future and keen to get started again."

Having been called up by her country for their two home games next month, Torpey will be looking to add to her 27 caps for the Matildas.

And off the pitch, with a keen eye for photography and diving into the culture of places, Torpey is hoping to experience something she never did during her time playing in America for San Diego Wave and Portland Thorns.

"It's great having some of the girls around, and we're trying to organise a day trip somewhere (with other UK-based Australia players)," she said.

"It makes such a difference because it's something I didn't have in America, so it's nice to have the girls near me."

Torpey's versatility has been a consistent theme throughout her career, having played in even more attacking wing roles in her earlier years.

"My versatility is one of my biggest strengths, and it's what has helped me to get into the squad for the Olympics and the Asia Cup, and being versatile helps the manager as well," said the 26-year-old, who has played in both full back positions for United.

"It's nice to feel a bit more settled in the squad and look to get as much game time as possible, but I still have a lot to learn and a lot of growing to do."

Torpey has had the pleasure of training and learning from WSL winner and former Lioness Demi Stokes at club level, while on the international stage she has spoken about the admiration she has for teammate Steph Catley.

A key member of Joe Montemurro's side in the latter stages of this year's Asia Cup, where she started the final three games, Torpey has become a more regular member of the Matildas set-up over the past few years.

"Every single player in the squad has so much quality, and I mentioned it at the Asia Cup that I learned so much, especially from Steph being a left back," she added.

"So to be able to learn from her every day is great, and she's a massive player for me.

"It's always good to have competition in the team because that is what makes us better every day, so I'm happy that we have that competition because everyone needs to fight for their spot."
