Wissa's double came after Filip Ugrinic's spectacular opener for Ches Blanquinegros, who finished ninth in La Liga last term, and saw United win the 54th annual Trofeo Naranja against the hosts.

Valencia were reduced to ten men in the 35th minute when José Luis Gayà was dismissed for a horrendous challenge on Anthony Elanga, who was stretchered off - although early indications are that his injury is not as serious as it initially appeared.

Jaissle handed a debut in goal to Lukáš Horníček, who signed from Braga earlier in the week, while Miodrag Pivaš made his first start in black and white. Malick Thiaw wore the captain's armband on his 25th birthday.

United fell behind to a wonderful goal inside the opening four minutes. Valencia worked the ball well and Ugrinic curled a shot into the top corner from 25 yards.

Within two minutes, the Magpies won the ball high up the field through Nick Woltemade, allowing Harvey Barnes to play in William Osula. He advanced but fired a low effort into the side-netting.

Then in the tenth minute, Elanga had the ball in the net after an incisive ball from Jacob Ramsey but was adjudged offside - although it appeared to be an errant flag.

Home skipper Gayà cut inside but his drive was deflected over, then Sven Botman was relieved to see an attempted headed clearance drop just wide of his own goal frame.

Referee José María Sánchez Martínez waved away strong appeals for a penalty when Osula looked to be brought down in the box, but he couldn't fail to take action when Gayà lunged in high on Elanga. The red card was out within a flash for an awful challenge.

In the 43rd minute, Javi Guerra tested Lukáš Horníček and at the break, Jaissle made four changes with Wissa, Sean Steur, Bazoumana Touré and Mason Miley all introduced.

And - after Horníček made a smart save from Guido Rodríguez, Wissa capitalised on a defensive error and slotted through the legs of goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski to level.

Ramsey drilled narrowly wide on the hour mark in one of his final actions before making way for Joelinton in a triple substition which also saw Joe Willock enter the fray and Dylan Charlton gain an opportunity to impress more than two years on from making his senior bow in a post-season friendly clash with Tottenham Hotspur in May 2024.

Soon afterwards, there was a debut for Henry Johnson, another young defender, as he replaced Thiaw. Jacob Murphy took the armband.

And after a swift Newcastle counter, Touré hared down the left and unselfishly squared for Wissa to tap home his second of the night.
