Born in Wembley to parents from the North East, Murphy joined Newcastle United from Norwich City in the summer of 2017.

Murphy - a boyhood Magpies fan - began his career at Norwich City, joining the Norfolk side at under-12 level alongside his twin brother Josh. Progressing to the club's academy in 2011, he was part of the team that won the FA Youth Cup in 2013 and he made his professional debut for the Canaries against Fulham in the FA Cup in January 2014.

A month later, he joined Swindon Town on loan in what would be the first of six loan spells away from Carrow Road - with additional temporary stays following at Southend, Blackpool, Scunthorpe, Colchester and Coventry.

Returning to Norwich for the 2016/17 season, he would become a first team regular and he scored both home and away against the title-winning Magpies.

His performances were enough to secure a dream move to Tyneside at the end of that campaign, scoring his first goal for the club in a 3-1 defeat at eventual Premier League champions Manchester City in January 2018.

He spent time on loan at West Bromwich Albion during the 2018/19 season before moving to Sheffield Wednesday on loan for the duration of the 2019/20 campaign.

But he returned to St. James' in the summer of 2020 and has since become a first team regular, with his energetic displays on the flank helping United record a fourth-placed finish in 2022/23 and a seventh-placed spot in 2023/24.
