International round-up: Wood becomes New Zealand's all-time record goalscorer

Chris Wood became New Zealand's all-time leading goalscorer on Monday as his brace helped his country record an emphatic 4-0 win over Fiji.

The Newcastle United frontman went into the 2022 World Cup qualifier one goal shy of Vaughn Coveny's tally of 29 goals for the All Whites.

And in his 62nd game for New Zealand, Wood powered home a header on the stroke of half time to give his side the lead in Qatar, equalling Coveny’s record.

Elijah Just made it 2-0 after the break and then, with 17 minutes left on the clock, Wood made history, slotting home with ease after being sent clear to register his 30th international goal.

He was substituted a couple of minutes later before Clayton Lewis' late penalty adding further gloss to the scoreline, but the night belonged to Wood, who could now add to his tally when Danny Hay's men face New Caledonia in their final game of the group stage on Thursday.

Should they progress, Wood and New Zealand could face a semi-final and a final next week as they bid to secure their place at the tournament later this year.
