Scott Bailey is determined for Newcastle United Under-19s to record their first UEFA Youth League victory of the 2025/26 season ahead of Wednesday's visit of Athletic Club (kick-off 3pm GMT).

The Toon teenagers welcome the Spanish outfit to the Gateshead International Stadium and seek a positive result in order to boost their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages, with the top 22 sides advancing into the Round of 32 stage.

After defeats against FC Barcelona, Union Saint-Gilloise and Benfica, Bailey is hopeful the young Magpies can bounce back in strong fashion but has still relished the "big challenge" of playing in, arguably, youth football's most prestigious competition.

The Durham-born teenager, who joined Newcastle's Academy as a nine-year-old, told newcastleunited.com: "I'm looking forward to the game. Athletic Club are a good team, who are in a strong position in the table, and after our start we are going to have to come out swinging.

"We need to start getting points on the board after three losses. There's been some decent bits in those matches but we haven't been able to pick up results for it so it's about making we sure we get a strong result this time.

"It's a massive learning experience playing some of the best academy teams across Europe. You can only benefit from that and I think, as a team, we are learning in playing against big sides.

"I'm enjoying the amount of games I'm playing as I haven't had that amount for the past few years, especially not seven games in one month. It's new to me but I'm loving it, having a game two or three times a week because I just love playing football."

United's under-21s side secured their first Premier League 2 victory of the season last week following a convincing 2-0 away win against Crystal Palace, with Bailey playing the full 90 minutes in Sutton.

The 19-year-old central midfielder believes the arrival of Lead Coach Adam Lawrence, who joined the Magpies' Academy in September following his departure from Manchester United, has played a key factor in the squad's positive form of late, recording three wins from their last four competitive matches.

"Since Adam has came in, the first few games didn't go to plan but the performances were there," Bailey added. "Recently, we have picked up decent results and won three games in a row. It's starting to come along and, individually, he's helped me a lot as he's quite a tactical coach and makes sure we understand our roles before we go into a game.

"That helps us to feel comfortable with everything that we set out to do in matches. The win against Crystal Palace was really good. We were very strong in the first-half and were, by far, the best team. In the second-half, they came out with a bit more but I think we were too strong as a team.

"We were really happy because we've had performances like that but haven't managed to get the results so we were pleased and I think we could've scored more."
