Newcastle United hero Dan Burn has been honoured with the Freedom of Blyth, his hometown, after a stellar few years on and off the pitch.

Councillor David Swinhoe, Mayor of Blyth, accompanied by Deputy Town Clerk Elaine Brown, visited the Newcastle United Training Ground this week to present the prestigious honour —its highest civic award— following his exceptional performance with Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup Final.

The presentation, originally planned for summer, was delayed due to Dan’s demanding training and fixture schedule.

In recent months, the defender has lifted the Carabao Cup, earned his maiden England call-up and continued to impress a regular under Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

The Freedom of Blyth recognises not only Dan’s sporting achievements but also the pride and inspiration he brings to the Blyth community. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated remarkable perseverance and determination, qualities that have made him a powerful role model for young people across the town.

Speaking at the presentation, Mayor Swinhoe said: “What matters most is how Dan has inspired our young people.

"He’s also been instrumental in raising the profile of Blyth. It makes you feel incredibly proud when you hear your hometown mentioned on national broadcasts – he’s from Blyth!”

Discussing the honour, Burn added: "I’m always proud to be from Blyth, I always tell people that. Hopefully the next generation of kids coming through, I can inspire them a bit to try and do something as well."
