Anthony Gordon admitted there were "no excuses" as Newcastle United fell to a 2-1 defeat against Sunderland in the first Tyne-Wear derby at St. James' Park in over a decade.

The Magpies got off to a flying start as Gordon opened the scoring in front of a raucous home crowd, the England international's 17th goal of the season across all competitions.

Despite leading at half-time though, Eddie Howe's side found themselves level through Chemsdine Talbi's close-range equaliser before Brian Brobbey's 90th minute winner condemned United to back-to-back defeats against their local rivals following December's 1-0 loss at the Stadium of Light.

Here are some of Gordon's post-match thoughts...

On the Tyne-Wear derby defeat...

"Not good enough. No excuses. We were good for 45 minutes which has been the case too often this season.

"It's something we have been trying to work on but not good enough to start second half. They were the better team in the second half."

On the second-half performance...

"I think we had chances, some good play, in the first half but I don't think we showed our quality.

"They were doing a man-for-man press, with two players marking me, so we always had a spare man and we never found them, using that advantage.

"That's how you become a top team and we're not at that level yet because it's such an easy thing to do in football and we couldn't do it."

On the manner of their defeat after December's reverse fixture...

"Probably worse because the other one's away. I think the way we lost the game, going ahead one-nil and I thought they were really poor.

"We let them into the game and gave them the win. The frustrating thing is, in my opinion, they're not a very good team compared to us. We shouldn't lose to them.

"Away [from home], it's more difficult because they have their fans, an atmosphere and a bit more pressure but, at home, we should not lose that game, not with the first half we had.

"We haven't been good enough starting second halves and it's an ongoing problem."

On aiming to bounce back after the upcoming international break...

"Football's always like that. The most important thing, always, is the next game. It's been a relentless run of fixtures but that's going to take a long time to get over for us and the fans because nothing can resurrect that.

"We've got to try our best and win as many games as possible, get up the table and into one of the European competitions."
