After attracting interest from a number of Premier League clubs, Charlie joined Newcastle United in the summer of 2022 from hometown club Kilmarnock FC.

The 20-year-old centre-back, who captained Scotland at the 2022 Under-17 European Championship finals in Israel, made his senior debut for Killie as a 16-year-old in October 2021 during a Scottish Challenge Cup last-16 win against Queen's Park.

The defender made a further three appearances for the 2021/22 Scottish Championship winners, including his league bow in April during a 1-1 draw against Raith Rovers.

McArthur signed a new contract at St. James' Park before joining Carlisle United on loan for the remainder of the 2024/25 season in January, recording ten appearances in League Two before making his Scotland Under-21s debut in March.
