The Spanish midfielder, son of former Deportivo la Coruña legend Fran González, progressed through Barça's youth ranks and helped the club's Under-19s reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Youth League in 2019 before making his senior debut for reserve team FC Barcelona Atlètic in May 2019 aged 17.

After renewing his contract with the European heavyweights in May 2021, González made his La Liga debut in the opening game of the 2021/22 season, replacing Sergio Busquets during a 4-2 win against Real Sociedad at Camp Nou.

The midfielder's 10-year stay at Barcelona came to an end when he joined Porto in the summer of 2023.

His performances gained the attention of Manchester City, with González completing a move to the Etihad Stadium on transfer deadline day in February 2025, joining Pep Guardiola's side for a reported £50 million.

González accrued 41 appearances in all competitions for Man City as the Citizens won a domestic cup double. The midfielder was the hero in City's FA Cup semi-final win against Southampton, netting a stunning long-range effort in a 2-1 comeback victory at Wembley Stadium.

Upon signing for Newcastle, he said: “I’m really happy to be here at this amazing club. I’ve only heard top words about the club and the city, so I’m really excited to live here and to be part of this project.

“I love the black and white shirt already and I can’t wait to start wearing it on the pitch for this club."
