Barnes' 102nd-minute clincher - the latest winning goal on record in Premier League history - sent St. James' Park into raptures at the end of an incredible contest in which the Magpies had to come from behind three times.
It was the former Leicester winger's second of the evening, with Barnes having earlier made it 1-1 with a smart finish to cancel out Brenden Aaronson's opener.
Leeds had been leading 3-2 going into the final minute on Tyneside, but Bruno Guimarães' penalty and Barnes' last-gasp intervention turned the game on its head on a memorable evening under the lights.
Here is what Barnes said after a breathless encounter on Tyneside:
On a remarkable victory...
"Crazy night, really - delighted now it's done, but that 100 minutes or whatever it was... it was a rollercoaster of a game.
"We had some good moments in the game and some control in parts, and then other parts we probably felt like they were on top. They went ahead in the game.
"But this team's full of spirit and character, and you could feel that we were going to fight our way back. We're delighted with the result in the end. A special night."
On fighting until the end and his winner...
"You don't want it to come as late as that but if it has to, it has to. You could feel that we were pushing, especially after we got level - you could really feel like the momentum was with us a little bit.
"We had that real belief that we could kick on and win the game, however that may be. As it was, it was a bit of a scrappy one, a second ball in the box, but as a player you've got to be ready for that opportunity.
"I did my best and got it back on target, and it's an amazing feeling when you see that go in."
On how he kept a cool head...
"There's no easy answer! I think it's just trying to find that bit of composure if you can and getting a decent strike towards goal. There's that many bodies in the box and that much chaos, anything can happen.
"I don't know if the keeper was a bit unsighted or whatever it was, but it's an amazing feeling when that goes in."
On moving up from 14th to sixth in the space of three games...
"It's important. Performances probably still aren't quite where we want them to be, even so tonight. But results-wise, those three results are massive and it's really jumped us up the table.
"We looked a few weeks ago when we were obviously nowhere near where we wanted to be, so to look now, it's a lot easier on the eye where we are. It's looking up from now and (we'll) push on.
"We've got a lot of games coming up in all different competitions and we want to do as well as we can in each of them, so it's about recovering and taking this form and momentum into the next few games."
