Young, who was raised in Walker, represented the Magpies as a schoolboy and captained the club at reserve level.
He spent almost ten years in the first team picture at St. James' Park between 1964 and 1973, making 56 appearances and scoring twice, and featured in successive Inter-Cities Fairs Cup campaigns in 1969/70 and 1970/71.
Adept in defence or midfield, Young went on to play for Sunderland, where he won the FA Cup in 1973, before captaining Charlton Athletic and finishing his playing career at Southend United.
Our thoughts are with David's family and friends at this difficult time.
