The Sweden international was nominated for the prize following his impressive strike during the Magpies' 2-0 away win against Tottenham Hotspur.

The 24-year-old, who scored his first Premier League goal for Newcastle during a 2-2 draw against Liverpool, got his name on the scoresheet after swivelling and firing home with his left foot after Amar Dedić headed Nico González's raking cross-field pass into his path.

Elanga beat the likes of Magpies teammate Joe Willock, Brentford pair Keane Lewis-Potter and Kevin Schade, Ipswich Town's Emersonn, Rayan Cherki of Manchester City and Sunderland's Nilson Angulo to claim the monthly gong.

On winning the award, he told newcastleunited.com: "It means a lot to get trophies like this, and on top of that, to get the win was even better.

"With those trophies, we just keep on stacking them up and we hope for more. I’m really, really grateful and hungry as well. I’m grateful to God because I've worked hard to get into opportunities like that and get into moments like that.

"First of all, I'm just happy with the with the result; we're three games in and we just want to keep on working hard.

"We know we're not the finished article yet, and we can always improve and get better, so we hope for more moments like this."
