After a resilient display from the Magpies, both in attack and defence, the hosts took a deserved lead in the closing stages of their first leg encounter at St. James' Park following Barnes' strike, the winger's sixth goal in this season's competition.
Hopes of a historic European win on Tyneside were cruelly dashed in the dying seconds following Lamine Yamal's stoppage-time penalty for the five-time European champions but Barnes still took a number of positives from his side's inspiring showing against the La Liga leaders.
Here are some of his post-match thoughts:
On the performance against Hansi Flick's side, who won three domestic trophies last season...
"Of course, we're disappointed with the way the game's ended but we've got to take the positives from the game.
"I thought we played really well and controlled the game in a lot of it. They're a dangerous team with dangerous players and we kept them quiet for long periods of the game.
"We created chances ourselves, got ourselves ahead in the game and for 93-94 minutes, we were winning the tie. We're level and it's all to play for next week so it's an exciting tie."
On Yamal's late penalty...
"It's just a kick in the teeth because I thought, not just the result but the performance deserved better for the way we played.
"We deserved to be going there next week with a one-goal lead. We haven't, that's football, and you've got to quickly forget about that, reset and go there with the mindset of winning and getting through the tie.
"That's the self-belief we have within the squad and that's exactly what we'll do next week."
On the defensive showing, with Barça restricted to two shots on target...
"It was really good. They're a dangerous team and have some world-class players so, for big periods of the game, we kept them quiet.
"We were solid and I think we limited their chances for a lot of the game. That little lapse of concentration has obviously cost us a goal but credit to us for the rest of the game.
"We showed ourselves the other side of the game, on the ball, how good we can be."
On remaining firmly in the contest ahead of next week's second leg at the Camp Nou...
"It's massive. We didn't talk about it before the game, being level. Today, we wanted to go and win the game. We haven't but we knew we couldn't be out of it.
"We made that mistake in the Carabao [Cup] where we felt we had a big mountain to climb and it's tough from there.
"You look at the game today, we've played them twice now so we have a real flavour of what they're about. We're bang in the tie so it's all about resetting. A big game this weekend [against Chelsea] and then, next week, getting our game plan together and really going after it."
