Nick Woltemade admitted he is "excited to come back to Germany" ahead of Newcastle United's UEFA Champions League trip to Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Wednesday.

The Magpies take on the Bundesliga outfit, who currently occupy fourth place in the German top-flight, at the BayArena (kick-off 8pm GMT) as they aim to boost their hopes of progressing into the competition's knockout phase with a valuable away win.

Woltemade, who scored 17 goals for VfB Stuttgart last season as well as winning the DFB-Pokal, is relishing a return to his native homeland for a first appearance in club football since completing a club-record move to United last summer and is hopeful of a positive outcome against Kasper Hjulmand's side, who sit one point behind the Magpies in the 36-team group.

Speaking to the media at the BayArena ahead of the Magpies' penultimate league phase fixture, Woltemade said: "I'm really excited to come back to Germany. I feel at home in Newcastle but, if I'm honest, to come back to my own country is really good.

"I'm happy to be here. I've played some games here with my old team, which didn't end well, so I'm excited to try and win tomorrow and get a good feeling in this stadium."

The Germany international, who scored on his Champions League debut during September's 4-0 away win against Union Saint-Gilloise, is aware of the threat Leverkusen can possess, with the German club recording an impressive 2-0 win at Manchester City in their previous European outing.

"It will be a tough game," the 6ft 6in striker added. "This summer, they had a lot of changes at the club with a lot of new players. Over the last two years, they've been really good and when I played here with (Werder) Bremen, I hardly touched the ball but they played such good football.

"There's been a lot of changes (for the club), a new manager, so I'm excited for what's coming tomorrow. I know they want to play football, still have good players, and you saw they won at Man City. They're in a good position but we want to win this game."

Since arriving on Tyneside in August, Woltemade has been in red hot goalscoring form for the Magpies during his debut campaign, with seven goals scored across all competitions to date.

The 23-year-old, who hails from Bremen, believes he is reaping the benefits of his work on the training pitch under Eddie Howe's stewardship and is confident he can continue adding to his goalscoring tally.

"I've improved a lot and I think, all in all, it's been a new step moving to a new country and has been really good for me," he said. "My physical work is getting better, I can sprint more and go on more duels. It's really important for the Premier League to get this in your mind and the gaffer has worked with me a lot.

"I always have the feeling that I can always score a goal even when I don't touch the ball for some minutes. The ball will come because I have such good teammates who give me good passes.

"I've settled in really well and I feel at home. I have a lot of games so I can't see so much of the city but I really like the place where I'm living.

"My friends and family always like watching the games and the most important thing for me is that the club is really nice. I'm happy to be there and I'm excited for every home game because the atmosphere is so nice. It feels really good after being here for three months now."

Woltemade has led the line for the vast majority of the 2025/26 season following Yoane Wissa's long-term injury but after the DR Congo international returned to action during last weekend's 2-1 win against Burnley in the Premier League, making his Magpies debut in the process, the German forward is thrilled at the prospect of linking up with his fellow forward in fixture fixtures.

"He's a really good player, a quality player who can score goals and he's a nice guy," he added. "He brings really positive vibes to the team because he is laughing a lot and gives a lot of energy.

"We can also play together and I'm really excited he's back. He's a quality player and that is what we need."
