Fabian Schär believes "he's ready to go" as the Newcastle United defender targets a return to footballing action for the first time since January.

The Swiss centre-back reported back to the club's training base, The KNOX, on Monday as he gets set for his ninth season with the Magpies.

Schär, who signed a one-year contract extension last month, is looking forward to getting back on the football pitch after sustaining an ankle injury at the beginning of the calendar year before a foot injection ultimately ruled the 34-year-old out for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

"It's great to be back," Schär told newcastleunited.com. "Normally, the first days of pre-season are not the best because you have testing and other things but it's always nice to see everyone.

"After not being with the team for a long time, to start training again is a good feeling and I'm quite excited.

"Pre-season is here for you to get fit but we usually do a lot in the off-season. We are given individual plans and you come back at a good level.

"The first weeks back are about getting fully fit. They're not nice, a lot of running and I think everyone dislikes them but it's part of the game. You also get to know the new players and it's important for them to know everyone and see how everything works.

"It's always a bit different because some players return later than others but the aim is to be fit and know how we're going to play."

With his contract due to expire this summer, Schär was delighted to extend his stay at St. James' Park until the end of the 2026/27 season and believes he still has plenty to offer ahead of the upcoming campaign.

The ball-playing defender, now the club's second-longest serving player in the current squad, faced a challenging period on the sidelines but is determined to regain full fitness ahead of Newcastle's pre-season schedule.

Schär, who has made over 250 competitive appearances for Newcastle, added: "I was very pleased. I don't have to say what the club means to me; it was always my first choice to stay here. I'm glad we found an agreement and it was good to get it done early.

"It's been a difficult time after my injury and what happened with my foot. I was glad I could really focus on coming back and knowing what's going to happen this year, being ready for day one.

"The last six months after my injury were the hardest of my career. I had to go through a lot and it was hard so I'm feeling a lot better now.

"There was unfinished business. I had a big setback with surgery which wasn't planned. I was close to coming back earlier and then had an infection which was tough. I felt gutted for it to end like that but I feel I am still able to add something to the team.

"I worked really hard and I'm ready to go. Hopefully, I can try to enjoy this next season.

"I'm going to need some time to adapt after being out for such a long period but I feel confident in my body and myself. I'm going to use this pre-season to come back as strongly as possible."

United welcomed the arrivals of Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Touré and Sean Steur this summer following respective moves from Stade de Reims, TSG Hoffenheim and Ajax. Schär believes the youthful trio will be able to comfortably embed themselves within the Magpies squad and display their talent in the fledgling stages of their careers.

"They are very young, talented players who will be great additions for the team," he added. "If you are so young and you come into a team like Newcastle, you want to showcase what you can.

"They've all done really well in the first few years of their careers to be able to come to this club. It'll be quite easy for them to settle in because it's a good group of lads and we'll be looking forward to playing with them and seeing how they play."
