Commentary By @NUFC

Newcastle claim three successive victories for the first time since November 2014, and move all the way up to fourth spot with nine points. Despite Joselu's wastefulness against his old club, and a moment of Shaqiri magic, Atsu's back post volley and Lacselles' header proved enough to get Newcastle over the line. Stoke laid siege to the Magpies' goal in the second half, but couldn't find an equaliser despite a succession of chances.

And that's it! Newcastle claim a narrow 2-1 victory at St. James' Park! It was a tale of missed chances for both teams, but Matt RItchie's quality showed as he assisted both his side's goals en route to victory!

94'

Gayle is caught offside from a long ball. Butland's free-kick is tossed forward in desparation, but Stoke can't make anything of it. Time's running out.

93'

CHANCE!! What a miss by Diouf!! Martins Indi whips it in beautifully and it's well met by Dioud, but he guides it just wide! That may be the last chance they get!

92'

Zouma's long throw is flicked on by Choupo-Mouting, but it's eventually hacked away as it drops.

90'

Elliot takes a free-kick in his own half and launches it forward. Four minutes of extra-time are announced.

89'

There's a clash of heads between Clark and Diouf as they compete for the ball. The referee drops the ball for them to contest, and it ends up back with Butland.

88'

Zouma uses his strength to push Atsu off the ball, and despite Newcastle appeals, there's no foul. He was simply too strong for Atsu.

87'

CHANCE! Crouch wins a long diagonal ball from Shaqiri and nods it down to Choupo-Mouting, but his half-volley is wildly over the bar from inside the box. That was their chance to level it!

86'

Substitution Ayoze Pérez Gutiérrez Mohamed Diamé

84'

Sobhi receives a cross-field pass well and drives Yedlin back into his box. He beats the full-back once witha  great feint, but instead of crossing, feints again and the ball runs out of play for a goal kick. Wasteful.

84'

Substitution Joe Allen Peter Crouch

83'

Perez pinches a throw in and bursts down the right, but his lofted cross is just too long and is cleared away.

81'

Mbemba is lucky to get away without a yellow car after a handball. His arms were very high there. Shaqiri steps over the free-kick in a promising position, but blazes over. That was a great opportunity for Stoke.

80'

Stoke are throwing men forward in search of this equaliser. They could easily get caught out on the break here.

79'

Substitute Shelvey makes a poor decision, shooting from well outside the box when Ritchie was free to his left.

78'

Substitution José Luis Sanmartín Mato Dwight Gayle

78'

Substitution José Luis Sanmartín Mato Dwight Gayle

77'

Yellow card Mikel Merino Zazón

76'

Allen bursts down the right side of the box, but Clark matches him all the way and blocks the cross. Eventually, the defender gets the correct decision from the referee, which is a goal kick.

Allen bursts down the right side of the box, but Clark matches him all the way and blocks the cross. Eventually, the defender gets the correct decision from the referee, which is a goal kick.

75'

CHANCE! Martins Indi makes a brilliant sliding block as Atsu charges down the left hand side. Excellent work from the Dutchman.

73'

The resultant free-kick is headed clear for a corner, which Shaqiri also takes, but that is cleared away too.

73'

Yellow card Ciaran Clark

69'

Substitution Isaac Hayden Jonjo Shelvey

68'

Goal Jamal Lascelles

68'

Assist Matt Ritchie

67'

Another long ball is chased by Atsu, and Martins Indi takes no chances by putting the ball out of play.

65'

CHANCE! Atsu races clear on goal, and Zouma brings him down in the area, but no penalty! It looked like a clear penalty, but on closer inspection, the Frenchman may have gotten a touch on the ball first. A massive opportunity goes begging for Newcastle.

64'

CHANCE! Stoke could have gone in front! A corner is met powerfully by Diouf, but Elliot gets down well and parries it away! Stoke could well nick a winner here!

62'

Substitution Jesé Rodríguez Ruiz Ramadan Sobhi

61'

Hayden is down in the centre circle, and Stoke use this break in play to make a substitution.

59'

NO GOAL! Perez has the ball in the net as the ball falls to him in the box, but he is correctly judged to be offside. They shouldn't have needed that goal to be in front anyway with the chances they've had.

57'

Goal Xherdan Shaqiri

57'

Assist Joe Allen

55'

Newcastle wina  corner, which is again taken short. Ritchie's eventual delivery is headed out, before a shot from distance is blocked away for another corner, which is also cleared. Stoke nearly break away, but Yedlin gets back to end the danger.

54'

A deft touch from Perez plucks the ball out of the air in his own half, but the forward is hauled down to prevent a quick attack.

51'

Choupo-Mouting stings the palms of Elliot with a fierce drive from the edge of the box, but the keeper is equal to it. The ball is then whipped across to Pieters, but he can't quite get there. Stoke are trying to hit back here and make Newcastle pay for their missed chances.

50'

Zouma shows quick feet and strength again to wriggle free of Joselu and get Stoke going again. He's been the Potters' best player so far. Choupo-Mouting tries a neat flick, but it doesn't quite come off.

49'

Shaqiri tries to swing the ball across the field to the advancing Pieters, but Yedlin heads clear.

48'

Zouma unleashes a powerful shot that flies harmlessly wide of the Newcastle goal, after being allowed ro advance down the right-hand side.

46'

CHANCE! Right at the start of the second half, Atsu's cross should have been cut out, but it finds Joselu, who again misses the target, going for the top left corner but firing over. He's missed a hat-trick of chances now!

If Newcastle see this game out, they will have recorded three consecutive Premier League wins for the first time since November 2014, when they won five in a row under Alan Pardew. Meanwhile, if Stoke lose, it will put an end to their five-game Premier League unbeaten run against Newcastle.

Newcastle have continued their trend of conceding possession and playing direct passes into attacking areas. Before the game, 34.5% of their passes had been played into the final third - a league high - while only Leicester had a lower possession average than the Magpies.

The half-time whistle goes, and Newcastle lead 1-0. The first quarter of an hour saw the visitors dominate possession, but after Ritchie's perfect delivery to Atsu at the back post, the hosts look like the side in charge. In fact, if not for some wasteful finishing by Joselu against his former club, Newcastle could be two or three-nil up. Benitez will no doubt encourage his side to put the game to bed in the second half.

45'

A foul on Zouma gives Shaqiri a chance to deliver the ball into the box, but it's a weak effort that is cleared by the first man. Stoke look short on ideas and inspiration here.

44'

Zouma shows good strength and quick feet to release Diouf down the right, but his pull-back is just behind Choupo-Mouting. Stoke are pushing a little more at the end of this half.

43'

The resulting throw-in sees Stoke put together a nice move in the final third, but Allen isn't given any space in the box and the danger is eventually cleared.

42'

There's some pushing and shoving between Shaqiri and Clark as the latter refuses to give the ball back for a quick throw-in. Nothing doing though.

40'

Pieters clatters into Perez on the touchline, and gives away a free-kick. Ritchie steps over it, but his delivery is uncharacteristically poor, and it sails over everyone and out for a goal kick.

39'

Both are teams fighting for the ball in midfield, but eventually Fletcher tries to release Choupo-Mouting over the top, but the striker is caught offside.

37'

Mbemba gives the ball away from a throw in, and in the scramble to get it back a free-kick is awarded to Stoke on the right side of the halfway line. That's been a couple of poor throws from the defender already this half.

35'

Ritchie tries to release Atsu with an outside-of-the-foot pass, but it's a little overhit and Zouma clears.

33'

CHANCE! Zouma heads away for a corner, which is taken short. The shot from the edge of the box squirms through to Joselu again, but his poked effort is cleared by an onrushing Butland. Another chance for the striker to score against his old club.

32'

Newcastle are just having a breather now as Elliot keeps the ball under no pressure. He slips playing the ball forward though, but it's straight out of play and there's no danger. It's a slippery surface.

30'

Ritchie's resulting free-kick is on target, but far too close to Butland and he gathers easily.

30'

Yellow card Kevin Wimmer

27'

CHANCE! Joselu spurns the opportunity to score against his former club as a whipped ball from the leftt sees him in acres of space with just Butland to beat. But he rushes and tries to take it on the volley, which is scuffed wide. He had time for a touch there and surely would have made it 2-0!

26'

Butland has to race out to clear the ball away with Atsu rushing on to him! Hairy moment there for the Stoke defence, but their keeper bails them out.

25'

Yellow card Isaac Hayden

25'

Yellow card Isaac Hayden

22'

For all of Stoke's possession, they haven't really tested Elliot in the Newcastle goal, or given the defence too much to think about.

19'

Goal Christian Atsu Twasam

19'

Assist Matt Ritchie

18'

Zouma plays a wonderful cross-field pass from right to left that is only just dealt with by Yedlin, who plays it back to his keeper to clear.

17'

Jese tries to put the ball into Choupo-Mouting's path as he runs between the two Newcastle centre-halves, but his first touch is very heavy and the chance is gone.

16'

Shaqiri drives infield, but his pass towards the left is cut out and Newcastle counter down the right, but Ritchie is robbed of the ball in the final third and the danger is cleared.

14'

Yedlin bombs down the right with great pace, but his low cross is easily gathered by Butland. Newcastle are looking to break quickly on Stoke when they win the ball back.

12'

DeAndre Yedlin gets the ball beyond the halfway line, but his pass down the line is overhit and it bounces out for a goal kick. He didn't really look to see if he had an option there.

12'

DeAndre Yedlin gets the ball beyond the halfway line, but his pass down the line is overhit and it bounces out for a goal kick. He didn't really look to see if he had an option there.

11'

Newcastle look to break through the pace of Atsu, but his pass to Joselu is intercepted, and the attack breaks down.

8'

Choupo-Mouting cuts inside from the left and has a drive at goal from outside the box, which is blocked away for a corner. The set piece comes to nothing though.

7'

Newcastle try to switch play quickly, but the ball skids quickly off the surface. It's very wet out there today, which could haev some effect on the game.

5'

Stoke have started well after their early blip, and are dominating the ball in the first few minutes.

4'

Shaqiri tries to lift the ball into the area, and it is only half-cleared. Stoke recycle possession, and Fletcher nearly manages to slip Diouf through, but Elliot is out quickly to gather.

3'

Fletcher concedes a free-kick with a late challenge on Hayden. Just a little clumsy, and no cards from the referee.

2'

Pieters whips the ball in after Choupo-Mouting plays him in on the left, but Allen can't quite get there and it is cleared.

1'

And we're off at St. James' Park!

The incoming Matt Ritchie could be a vital inclusion for the hosts, having registered more league assists (9) than any other Newcastle player since his arrival in the summer of 2016 - including the winner against Swansea last time out.

Stoke make just one forced change, as the injured Geoff Cameron is replaced by Bruno Martins Indi in the heart of defence.

The home side make three changes from their 1-0 win away at Swansea, with full-backs Jesus Gamez and Javier Manquillo replaced, along with midfielder Jacob Murphy. Chancel Mbemba, DeAndre Yedlin, and Matt Ritchie start in their stead.

Stoke captain Ryan Shawcross is out with a back injury that forced him off in the draw against Manchester United, despite hopes that he would recover in time to make the squad. Geoff Cameron (hamstring) is also out, while Ibrahim Afellay (knee) and Stephen Ireland (broken leg) are long-term absentees.

Newcastle remain without full-backs Paul Dummet (hamstring) and Massadio Haidara (knee), but goalkeeper Karl Darlow is fit again and starts on the bench. Centre-half Chancel Mbemba starts, despite suggestions that a hamstring injury picked up on international duty with DR Congo would keep him sidelined for several weeks. Aleksandar Mitrovic misses out as he serves the second game of his three-match suspension.

Stoke substitutes: Grant, Johnson, Berahino, Tymon, Sobhi, Crouch, Adam

Stoke (3-4-3): Butland; Zouma, Martins Indi, Wimmer; Pieters, Fletcher, Allen, Diouf; Jese, Choupo-Mouting, Shaqiri

Newcastle substitutes: Lejeune, Gayle, Manquillo, Murphy, Woodman, Diame, Shelvey

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Elliot; Clark, Lascelles, Mbemba, Yedlin; Merino, Hayden; Atsu, Perez, Ritchie; Joselu

The line-ups are out! We'll start with the home team.

Newcastle's home form in general has improved under Benitez, winning four and losing just one of their seven Premier League home games in his care, compared to a much poorer record of just four wins in 14 home games under his predecessor, Steve McClaren.

However, returning Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez, who missed his side's victory over Swansea while he recovered from an operation, will fancy his chances against his managerial counterpart, having lost just once to Hughes in 11 meetings. Furthermore, Newcastle have a good home record against the Potters, with just one defeat in their last 13 meetings at St. James' Park in all competitions (W9 D3 L1).

Potters boss Mark Hughes has an excellent record against Newcastle, having overseen nine victories and five draws in 19 attempts as a manager - he has only beaten Sunderland more, with 12 wins against the Black Cats. Additionally, Stoke are unbeaten in their last five Premier League games against the Magpies, and kept clean sheets in all but one of those games (W3 D2 L0).

Stoke, too, have made a solid start to the season, beating Arsenal and holding league leaders Manchester United to a draw. However, they have struggled away from home recently, having lost nine of their last 14 away games, and failing to score in seven of their last 10.

Newcastle were beaten in their first two Premier League games of the season against Tottenham and Huddersfield, but two wins in their following two games against West Ham and Swansea sees the Magpies come into the game in high spirits. In fact, a win would see them register their joint-highest points total at this stage of a Premier League season (five games in), with nine points. They achieved the feat in the 2011/12 season under former boss Alan Pardew.

Both sides have made reasonably strong starts to their Premier League campaigns, and are separated by just a point after four games.
